Creativity is the best solution- not gun control

By Brittany Yurkovitch on 8/13/2012

“Creativity can solve almost any problem. The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality overcomes everything.”- George Lois

Perhaps it is an over-saturation of media coverage, but it does seem like we have witnessed an excessive amount of gun violence this year. The Trayvon mess, the crazy Batman shooter, the Sikh temple guy and the Texas A&M killer- just to name the few that I can easily recall. What’s going on with people these days?  While each story is uniquely troubling, I am more concerned with the political reaction to these isolated cases.

In light of these recent incidents, there is no shortage of politicians clamoring for excuses to disarm the American population. Obviously, this is the immediate gut reaction; if people die as a result of a bullet, then making guns and said bullets illegal will solve the problem, right?  Unfortunately, this issue requires more thinking than that. After all, this is the same line of reasoning  that led to the unsuccessful War on Drugs. So why are we going to do the same thing  expecting different results? Isn’t that the definition of insanity? I know it’s been a while since most people have taken a history course, but how could so-called freedom loving Americans have so easily forgotten what comes along with gun control?

Free men own guns, not slaves.

Thomas Jefferson’s words have never rung truer: “Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”

It is incredibly unfortunate that so many people agree with the easy, superficial reaction.  Really, is there no other way to solve the problems of violence in this country? Why isn’t the mainstream media talking about the psychiatric drugs that some of these killers are prescribed? Why the push to shred the second amendment for law-abiding citizens when the largest criminal, our government (specifically DHS) remains silent with their purchase of 750 million additional hollow point rounds?

And honestly, if you are that concerned about gun violence, then get trained and purchase a weapon for your own protection- don’t cower in fear and beg the government to strip other people of their rights. I could go on and on about this issue- I will never be OK with gun control. Even the godfather of gangsta rap, Ice-T, who also served in our military, acknowledges that gun rights are a protection against tyranny.

Creativity is an under-appreciated force of good in this country. Americans are beautifully creative and I know we are smart enough to figure this one out without calling on the government to shred constitutional protections. I recently discovered this amazing artist who channels his disappointment for tyranny and corruption in a beautifully productive way. Come on guys, get inspired; with a little thought we can easily figure this one out.
